19 June has been International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict Situations (proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly) since 2015.
In The Prosecutors, director Leslie Thomas talks about this subject. War is accompanied by rape and looting. Thomas asks the right question – why we should tolerate sexual violence as a by-product of those wars? The film shows that prosecution in this area is slowly changing, although lawyers, governments and citizens’ initiatives are working hard on it worldwide. We see examples of this in the film: three legal prosecutors in Colombia, Bosnia & Herzegovina and the Democratic Republic of Congo respectively, are fighting for justice.
After the film there is a conversation with the filmmaker, Leslie Thomas, who comes to The Hague for this purpose, and with Niamh Hayes, “legal expert in prosecution of gender-related war crimes.”
