DESCRIPTION:19 June has been International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict Situations (proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly) since 2015. \nIn The Prosecutors\, director Leslie Thomas talks about this subject. War is accompanied by rape and looting. Thomas asks the right question – why we should tolerate sexual violence as a by-product of those wars? The film shows that prosecution in this area is slowly changing\, although lawyers\, governments and citizens’ initiatives are working hard on it worldwide. DESCRIPTION:Please join ART WORKS Projects for the opening of our fifth annual Emerging Lens exhibition Life After a Hate Crime by photographer Megan Farmer. Farmer will be joined by Dr. Iván Arenas (see bio below) to discuss this project and take questions from the audience. To learn more about the Emerging Lens Mentorship Program\, click here. \n  \nRemarks to start at 6:30pm.\nRefreshments will be served.\nFree and open to the public.  \n  \nFarmer’s project follows DaShawn Horne\, his family\, and his community as he fights to recover from a racially motivated attack that occurred in early 2018. Farmer’s relationship with Horne and his family is ongoing; this exhibition will include recent interviews with the family as Horne continues to rebuild his life.  \n  \n“The Horne family welcomed me into their upended lives after a brutal hate crime changed everything. DaShawn Horne\, a young father\, was beaten within an inch of his life. After suffering a traumatic brain injury\, he had to relearn everything he once knew. He is still recovering today. Not only was DaShawn’s life forever changed\, but the lives of his family members were too. My hope is to shed light onto the realities that hate crime survivors and their families are left with long after news headlines fade\,” says Farmer about Life After a Hate Crime. \n  \nDr. Iván Arenas is a Mexican-American anthropologist\, architect\, artist\, activist\, and parent. His research focuses on how social movements use creative art practices to establish solidarities beyond the state. Dr. Arenas works with Chicago Torture Justice Memorials to provide reparations for Chicago’s racially motivated law enforcement violence and with the ACT Collective using art to build political artistic collaboration and dialogue across Chicago’s multiple communities. Dr. Arenas is the Associate Director for Community Partnerships at UIC’s Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy (IRRPP). At IRRPP\, he works to connect faculty\, students\, and the community through research and programming on race\, ethnicity\, and public policy that enable not just greater understanding of racial inequalities\, but mobilizes towards collective action. He received his Ph.D. in Anthropology in 2011 from the University of California\, Berkeley. \n  \nPhoto: LaDonna Horne becomes emotional after one of the first times that her son\, DaShawn Horne\, made a sound on Thursday\, March 15\, 2018\, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. SUMMARY:NY Exhibition of Women of Togo
DESCRIPTION:Please join ART WORKS Projects for the opening of our exhibition Women of Togo by photographer Zoe Rain at Fordham University in partnership with the Global Healthcare Innovation Management Center\, the Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs\, and Integrate Health. \n  \nWomen of Togo\nJanuary 19 – 31\, 2020\nCanisius Gallery | Fordham University\n2546 Belmont Ave.\, Bronx\, NY 10458\nFor more info: canisiusgallery@gmail.com. \n  \nTogo\, a country of eight million people\, has been forgotten by much of the world. UNICEF named Togo the 15th Most Dangerous Place to be born in the world in 2018. Nearly one in ten children will not live to see his or her fifth birthday—a rate fifteen times higher than that of developed countries. The five major killers of children in Togo—malaria\, diarrhea\, pneumonia\, HIV\, and malnutrition—are all easily treatable conditions. \nIn February 2018\, photographer Zoe Rain joined Integrate Health/Santé Intégrée\, a community-led international health organization working to create a world where everyone\, everywhere has access to high-quality healthcare in Togo\, West Africa. Rain toured four clinics in the rural communities of Djamdè\, Kpindi\, Sarakawa\, and Adabewere where\, historically\, a lack of resources\, including no running water or electricity costs lives. The artist was on hand to document the impact that clinic renovations had to these distinct\, isolated communities. \nIn Women of Togo\, Rain uses a skill set and aesthetic cultivated capturing celebrity portraits—a look that we have come to associate with red carpets and award shows—to document the integrity\, autonomy\, self-reliance\, and pride of Togolese women. For many Togolese\, the frustration of having no opportunities\, options\, or resources can leave people feeling that they have no control. DESCRIPTION:ART WORKS Projects is honored to present ECHOES: Looking back on Flint amid COVID\, a photographic collaboration between students of Youth News Movement\, Report for America fellow KT Kanazawich\, Flint Beat\, and Emerging Lens 2020 Fellow Brittany Greeson. \nSince 2014\, residents of Flint have fought for their right to safe drinking water. The gross negligence of government systems\, a failing infrastructure\, decades of racial inequity and rising income inequality left the community exposed to lead poisoning. As the community’s battle to secure clean water continued\, the City of Flint was then hit hard by the COVID-19 Pandemic. These compounded crises further exposed systemic inequities in communities nationwide and pushed Flint residents to be self-reliant as they had been amid the City’s ongoing water crisis. \nECHOES reflects on the City of Flint amid these layered challenges. The images explore themes of hope and despair\, love and loss\, and connection and separation during the global pandemic. They do not attempt to encapsulate a single experience but rather explore narrative threads connecting the complex perspectives of Flint’s community members amid such challenging moments in history.
