DARFUR/DARFUR
At least 400,000 civilians have been killed and over 2,000,000 people made homeless.
Events in Darfur, Sudan have resulted in the death or injury of over 400,000 civilians and the displacement of millions. The DARFUR/DARFUR exhibition was created to depict the crisis through a series of multi-panel, exterior, wall-sized projections and to place the brutal realities faced in Darfur in context with its vibrant culture and people. The human face of the continuing atrocities is meant to prompt international support for the prevention of further destruction of life.
Featuring the photography of Lynsey Addario, Mark Brecke, Helene Caux, Ron Haviv, James Nachtwey, Paolo Pellegrin, Michal Ronnen Safdie, Ryan Spencer Reed, and Brian Steidle the project is accompanied by the music of Abdel Gadir Salim, Brett Fuchs, Rasha, Khalifa Ould Eide, and Dimi Mint Abba.
Launched in New York in September 2006, the exhibition has been seen in over 35 museums and cultural centers around the world, including Paris, New York, Berlin, Milan, Istanbul, Chicago, and Montreal. Each installation is a unique project with the interaction between the over 150 images from the projections and the surrounding architecture, screens, and neighborhoods. Live performances by such musicians as cellist Yo-Yo Ma have accompanied the exhibition’s images and partnerships with the Save Darfur Coalition, Human Rights Watch, Oxfam, American Refugee Committee, and other humanitarian and advocacy groups have allowed many viewers to become directly involved with action to end the crisis.
DARFUR/DARFUR Life/War, a companion book to the exhibition, provides an opportunity to further explore the narrative of the war in eastern Sudan and western Chad and to see the impact on civilian life. Published by Melcher Media it features an introduction by Pulitzer Prize winning author Samantha Power. Available at nationwide bookstores and on Amazon.com.
A print on fabric exhibition of 30 of the images from the DARFUR/DARFUR collection has recently been completed. Please email us at info@artworksprojects.org for information about scheduling installations.
