People always say it only takes one person to make a difference. I have always heard that. Until recently, I never gave it much thought.

Enter: Nancy Borowick.

I met her earlier this year while traveling by train from Washington, D.C. to Baltimore.

My sister, a fellow friend and I were returning from a 5-day trip that involved launching Art Works Project’s Congo/Women exhibit at the Rayburn House Office Building.

Needless to say, we were still exhausted. Our trip consisted of managing the hectic business of the exhibition’s installation while squeezing in side trips and sightseeing.

During the ride, my friend began talking to the girl sitting next to her. She seemed to be around our age—perhaps even fresh out of college. She introduced herself and the four of us talked for the remainder of the train ride.

Nancy tells us she is a photographer working out of New York. She told us about her trips to Ghana educating children about the art of photography. While there, she photographs the life around her and develops beautiful work. Afterwards, she prints hard cover photography books to sell. The proceeds have enabled her to return to the village she visits in Ghana with enough money to build a well.

While educating children in Ghana about photography, Nancy has also brought water to a village in need.

I was completely inspired after talking for a short 45 minute train ride. It is truly amazing what one person has the power to do if they try. I really only takes one person to make a difference.
